Manifesto for change

Talk about it. This is one of the most important things you can do. Speaking up about environmental issues will likely start a chain reaction and hopefully cause many others, young and old, to speak out and take action too.

Reduce your greenhouse gas emissions. See Chapter 2 for more.

Make your home as energy-efficient as possible. For example, replace halogen bulbs with more energy-efficient LED bulbs, wash clothes at a lower temperature, turn your thermostat down, insulate your home as much as possible (walls and roof), fit doors and windows to avoid draughts, reduce your use of home appliances and install a smart meter.

Use your power as a consumer. Always consider the carbon footprint of the products you buy. What are the air miles of your food? Can you buy more local and seasonal products? Think about the environmental impact of practices like deforestation, used to produce unsustainable palm oil; avoid products containing it if and where possible.

Support environmentally responsible and sustainable companies such as Beyond Meat, Klean Kanteen and Abel & Cole, as well as local independent businesses. Do a bit of research into companies’ credentials and then repeatedly return to them and recommend them to friends.

Join protests. The power of citizens coming together through collective action cannot be underestimated. It’s more than just a means to change a decision-maker’s mind. Sometimes, being in a throng of change-makers and feeling the energy, passion and hope of a crowd helps to recharge you and push you to continue fighting. The school climate strikes and the Extinction Rebellion protests have both had measurable impacts, with governments around the world making commitments that were unimaginable before. It’s not enough yet, but they’re steps in the right direction.

Join campaign groups and organizations such as 350.org, Greenpeace and Earthjustice calling for governments to: ∘ stop investing in and subsidizing the fossil fuel industry. This money could be used to support healthcare, natural restoration, green infrastructure projects, renewable energy and other essential priorities. This will allow the money to be channelled to more sustainable ventures, whilst also supporting global decarbonization and creating an international market for renewable energy technology

∘ diversify their supply of energy, as this weakens the dominance of autocratic petrostates, such as Russia, whose supply of fuel many countries are highly reliant on

∘ redesign energy markets so that there is a bigger safety buffer and energy suppliers hold more reserves, just like banks carry capital, to enable them to absorb shortages and deal with the vulnerable state of renewable power.
